A LITTLE HISTORY

Drumchapel Arts Workshop (DRAW)

Since its beginnings in 1992, when the local housing association allocated a tenement house to a group of residents eager to participate in the arts, Drumchapel Arts Workshop (DRAW) has held a valued and important place within both the local and wider community.

Over the years, the organisation has grown significantly. From its early development through Urban Aid funding to achieving charitable status in 2010, DRAW has continued to evolve. Our current venue, located on the ground floor of a high-rise block, provides an informal and welcoming creative space where members of the local community and beyond can explore and express their artistic potential.

A committed and dedicated committee works tirelessly to ensure a wide range of engaging and successful programmes and projects are available to participants.

We have built strong partnerships with many statutory organisations and agencies, including the NHS, occupational therapists, Momentum, Right Track, and Careers Scotland. These partnerships help us widen access to the arts and expand opportunities for those involved in our programmes.

Participants frequently highlight the positive impact of their involvement, noting increased wellbeing, confidence, and social integration. We proudly welcome a diverse range of participants.

DRAW has extensive experience working with:

  • Primary and secondary schools

  • Nurseries and parents

  • Adults and elderly groups

  • Individuals with additional learning needs

  • Unemployed support groups

  • Ethnic minority communities

  •

We also collaborate with organisations such as the Social Work Department, Glasgow Life, COPE, Drumry House, Drumchapel LIFE, and GRA.

Celebrating Success

Our achievements reflect the impact of our work. For example:

  • As finalists for a Careers Scotland award, we delivered a painting and decorating programme for unemployed young people, supporting participants into apprenticeships and permanent employment.

  • In partnership with Impact Arts, we ran Fabpad Design workshops to support young homeless people in transforming houses into homes.

  • Anniesland College delivered a satellite NC Arts and Design course at DRAW for six years.

  • In 2011, we were honoured to receive the Creative Social Economy Organisation of the Year award from Glasgow West Regeneration Agency.

  •

Looking Forward

We continue to provide a diverse range of classes and creative opportunities through our Arts Workshop. With participants now coming from an increasingly wide geographical area, we remain committed to breaking down social barriers and promoting the life-affirming, socially inclusive benefits of engaging in the arts.
